Casa Rinconada, Chaco Canyon - Built between approximately 1070 and 1110 AD.&#38;nbsp;You can help me preserve and archivally documment these sites by making a donation to my Go fund me. I’m in an ongoing operation with a severely defunded National Park Service to photograph and submit archival docummentation of these cultural resources to the Library of Congress. A word about abandoned mines!
Many of the environments presented on this website are perilous and were only accessed&#38;nbsp; with a thorough understanding of the hazards present and the necessary precautions to mitigate them. This often involves engaging the expertise of professional miners or underground search and rescue teams who possess a comprehensive understanding of the abandoned workings, airflow patterns, and specific hazards inherent to a particular location. Never enter an abandoned mine without the appropriate training, people, equipment, and protocols in place.

It is important to note that mines were not constructed with longevity in mind and many that were built over a century ago now present a plethora of hazards such as unstable rock formations, deteriorated timber supports and ladders, unexpected drops, and the potential for sudden roof collapses. Additionally, the presence of invisible and flammable gasses or lack of oxygen, heighten the risk of injury or death. In coal mines, the presence of methane and black damp must be taken into careful consideration. Furthermore, barometric changes above ground can cause shifts in airflow underground which can trap individuals in areas with poor air quality, making escape impossible.

The Splitrock Iron Furnace
Located in Morris County, New Jersey, it was built in 1862 during the height of the American Civil War. The furnace was constructed by the Split Rock Iron Company, which was formed by a group of local investors who saw the potential for iron production in the area. The furnace was built near a large deposit of iron ore and was powered by a nearby stream, which provided the necessary water to power the furnace's blast machinery.

During its peak production years, the furnace produced over 400 tons of iron per month and employed over 200 workers. The iron produced by the furnace was used for a variety of purposes, including the production of weapons and ammunition for the Union army during the Civil War. The furnace also produced iron for other industrial uses such as railroads, bridges, and buildings. However, after the end of the war, demand for iron dropped significantly, and the Splitrock Iron Furnace was forced to close in 1866.

The furnace was built in 1741 and was in operation until 1884, producing iron for various purposes such as weapons, tools, and machinery. The furnace is notable for its use of charcoal as a fuel source, which was the primary fuel used in iron production during the colonial period. The furnace also utilized a blast mechanism, which was a significant technological advancement at the time, that increased the efficiency of the iron production process.

The Oxford Iron Furnace also played a crucial role in the American Revolutionary War, as it supplied iron for weapons and ammunition used by the Continental Army. Additionally, the furnace was operated by skilled ironworkers, many of whom were enslaved Africans, highlighting the important role that enslaved labor played in the early American economy.

The Scranton Iron Furnace also represents an important period in the history of American labor, as it was one of the first sites to employ a large number of immigrant workers from Ireland and other countries. These workers faced difficult working conditions and low wages, but their efforts helped to lay the foundation for the growth of the American middle class. Established in 1818 and in operation until 1911, it produced iron castings for various purposes such as weapons, tools, and machinery including some of America’s first steam engines, locomotives, pipes for New York City’s water system and cannons that helped win the Civil War. It also produced a wide range of iron products for civilian use, including engines, boilers, and other machinery.

In 2021, the West Point Foundry Archeological Site, which includes foundry remains and nearby Foundry Dock Park, was designated a National Historic Landmark, the federal government’s highest recognition for places that increase understanding of America’s past.

	The Mrs Charles M. Schwabb School
Founded in 1917 by Charles M. Schwabb as a tribute to his wife, Emma Eurana Dinkey Schwabb. The school was built in the Renaissance Revival architectural style and was designed by the renowned architect, Henry Hornbostel. The school was initially established as a residential school for girls from families of modest means and provided them with a high-quality education. The curriculum at the school was designed to provide students with a well-rounded education that focused on academic, cultural, and physical development.

Charles M. Schwabb was a prominent figure in the rail and steel industry during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He started his career as an engineer at the Edgar Thomson Steel Works in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, before moving on to work for the Carnegie Steel Company. Schwabb eventually rose to become the president of the United States Steel Corporation in 1901, a position he held until 1932. During his tenure, he oversaw the expansion of the company and was instrumental in the development of the American steel industry. He was also a noted philanthropist and supported a number of charitable causes, including the establishment of the Mrs Charles M. Schwabb School in Weatherly, PA. His legacy in the rail and steel industry and his commitment to philanthropy continue to be celebrated and remembered to this day.

Created to connect the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to the rest of the rail system in Brooklyn. The tunnel was originally built in the 1840s as a means of transporting goods and passengers from the LIRR to the rest of Brooklyn, and was intended to bypass the congested surface streets of the city. The tunnel was also used by streetcars and subways, which operated in the tunnel until 1861. The tunnel was closed to subway service at that time and has been unused since then.
This was the last photo taken before the city shut down access to the tunnel in 2010.

Mono Lake - California


	Mono Lake has a long and complex history surrounding water rights and the city of Los Angeles. In the 1940s, the city began diverting water from the Mono Lake tributary streams to meet the growing water demands of its rapidly expanding population. This caused the lake's level to drop dramatically, altering its delicate ecosystem and leading to a lawsuit by environmental groups and concerned citizens.
	 The legal battle went all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of Mono Lake and ordered the city to reduce its diversions and restore a more natural flow to the lake. The Mono Lake case set a precedent for the protection of ecosystems and natural resources in the face of growing water demands and helped establish the principle that water must be managed sustainably and in a manner that protects the environment.

San Francisco built Pulgas Water Temple as a monument to the engineering marvel that brought Hetch Hetchy water more than 160 miles across California from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the Bay Area. The Hetch Hetchy Project took 24 years to build through the Great Depression at a cost of $102 million.

On October 28, 1934, the roar of Hetch Hetchy mountain water greeted everyone gathered at Pulgas Water Temple to celebrate its arrival. With vivid memories of the fire that had raged unchecked after the Great Earthquake of 1906, the city rejoiced in its new secure, plentiful supply of high quality drinking water. The frieze above the columns expresses the city’s joyful relief:

 “I give waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people.”
Pulgas Water Temple was designed in the Beaux Arts style by William Merchant, a San Francisco architect trained by Bernard Maybeck. Merchant’s design featured fluted columns and Corinthian capitals to reflect the architecture of ancient Greeks and Romans, whose engineering methods were used to build the new water system. Artist and master stone carver Albert Bernasconi brought Merchant’s drawings to life.

It was completed in 1878 and was over 4,600 feet long. The tunnel allowed fresh air to circulate through the mines and provided a way to drain water and move people and material in and out. It was a major innovation in mining technology and played a critical role in the development of the Comstock Lode.
The mines in the Comstock were notiorious for bad air while operational, and they’ve only gotten worse. Never enter an abandoned mine without the proper training, people, equipment and procedures in place!&#38;nbsp;

It was founded in 1877 as a mining camp during the California Gold Rush and quickly became one of the largest and most prosperous gold and silver mining towns in the region.

In 1875, a prospector named William Bodie discovered gold in the area and soon after, the Bodie Mining District was established. The town quickly grew as more and more miners and prospectors arrived, and at its peak, had a population of over 10,000 people.

The town had a variety of businesses such as hotels, saloons, brothels, general stores, a Wells Fargo office and a red-light district. It also had a variety of religious buildings, including a Catholic church and a Chinese temple.

However, as the mines began to produce less and less gold and silver, the population began to decline. By 1892, the Standard Consolidated Mine, one of Bodie's largest mines, closed down and many residents left the town. By the 1920s, Bodie's population had dropped to less than 400, and by 1942 the last mine in Bodie closed, and the city became a ghost town.

In 1961, the State of California declared Bodie a State Historic Park, and it has been preserved in a state of "arrested decay" since then. Today, visitors can tour the town and see the remaining buildings and artifacts, giving a glimpse into what life was like during the gold and silver rush of the late 1800s.

Bodie State Historic Park is now a National Historic Landmark, and it is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world to see the well-preserved buildings, streets and artifacts of the gold-mining town of the past.

A rare, well-preserved example of a late-19th-century stamp mill that was used to process gold and silver ore.&#38;nbsp;

The Standard Mill was built in the late 1800s and was used to crush and grind ore from the nearby mines. It used a series of stamp machines, which were large mechanical devices that used heavy metal stamps to crush the ore and extract minerals. The mill also had a cyanide plant, which was used to extract gold and silver from the ore using a chemical process called cyanidation.

The Standard Mill is a rare surviving example of a stamp mill from the gold rush era. It is also an important part of the history of Bodie, which was a bustling mining town in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The tramway consisted of a series of towers and cables that supported tram cars, which were used to transport the ore. The ore tramway played a vital role in the development of the mining industry in Pioche and helped to make the area a major gold-producing region.

Constructed in the 1870s. The courthouse was built to serve as the seat of government for Lincoln County, Nevada, and was named for the large amount of money that was spent on its construction.
The courthouse was designed in the Victorian style, with a two-story brick building and a mansard roof. It was completed in 1872 and served as the county courthouse until the late 1960s. 
The courthouse is a significant piece of Nevada's history, and it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is known for its elaborate architecture and for the important role it played in the development of the county and the state.

Built in 1912, this prefabricated mill aimed to revive a dying district with modern technology to no avail. The 7,500-foot tunnel carved into the mountain began in 1877, but proceeded sporadically until 1904. The mill operated for just two years before the Frisco went silent in 1914.

Despite dwindling membership in the GAR, the building itself has endured. Vacated in the 1930s, it found new uses over time and was eventually revitalized as a restaurant that unfortunately did not survive the pandemic. 
Today it sits unused, for sale, and holds a place on the National Register of Historic Places.


	Fisher BodySpecializing in automobile bodies, the plant played a crucial role in meeting the growing demand for cars during the 1920s and 1930s. The plant contributed significantly to the production of popular models from Chevrolet and Buick, showcasing innovative manufacturing techniques and high-quality craftsmanship.

During World War II, the Fisher Body 21 plant was repurposed to support the war effort, shifting from civilian automobile production to manufacturing military vehicles and equipment. This transformation was part of a broader national effort to aid the Allied forces and highlighted the plant's adaptability and importance during a pivotal time in history.

Michgan Central Station
 In December 1913, less than a year after Manhattan's Grand Central Terminal opened, Detroit unveiled Michigan Central Station, a neoclassical transportation hub that saw 4,000 daily passengers at its peak.
 Both stations were designed by the same Beaux Arts architects, Warren &#38;amp; Wetmore and Reed &#38;amp; Stem, but their fates diverged. Michigan Central closed in 1988 and fell into decay. Ford Motor Company purchased the building in 2018, and with over 3,000 artisans involved, the station has been revived as a tech and cultural hub. 
The Grand Hall's 29,000 Guastavino ceiling tiles have been re-secured with miles of new grout, and a glass roof now shelters the original brickwork in the south concourse. Stonework, lighting, and period details throughout the station have been meticulously restored, the result of 1.7 million work hours. Ford emphasizes that the team poured their love for Detroit into the project, which will "shape the future of the Motor City."
